The first wave of significant protests in Hong Kong began in 2014 with the Umbrella Movement, also referred to as the Umbrella Revolution or the Occupy Movement. During this movement, which lasted from September to December of 2014, protestors occupied public areas and streets to express their frustration with the new electoral reforms. With these reforms, the Chinese government limited universal suffrage for the position of Chief Executive of Hong Kong and implemented barriers for anti-Beijing political candidates. These reforms galvanized the youth, a traditionally uninvolved group in Hong Kong politics, with students standing at the forefront of many major protests. In response to the demonstrations in public areas and major intersections, Hong Kong government officials decried the occupations as "illegal" and authorized the use of force to subdue protestors and clear the areas. This practice of spatial violence, forcing civilians out of public spaces and determining where people can and cannot go, undermined public support for the police and the government. The act of limiting geographical access is in itself a form of censorship by restricting how people can physically express themselves. Artists in Hong Kong also reinforced this notion by explaining how the limits on their physical space can sometimes limit their creativity and freedom of expression.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
