Welcome to “Sports Sponsorships through Style”, an exhibit that delves into the dynamic relationship between star athletes, brand sponsorships, and their impact on fashion during the 1980s. This era marked a significant turning point in the way fashion is showcased by star athletes, and consumer culture. Athletes have not only become icons for their stardom on the court, field, or pitch but for their influential trendsetting in fashion. The 1980s were a period of rapid cultural change and economic prosperity, characterized by the rise and emergence of celebrity culture. Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Joe Montana are just some examples of the types of athletes we had in the 1980s (Dumais, 2024). Before the 80s, athlete sponsorships were not really too popular of a thing.. So the 80s really popularized the ability for the top athletes to collaborate with fashion/sporting companies and grow their brands. Today, when you hear the word “Jordan” you think of Bulls star and NBA legend Michael Jordan’s signature pair of Nike shoes that are still sold to date. The purpose of the “Sports Sponsorships through Style” exhibit is to shed light on the relationship between star athletes and fashion brands during the 1980s and the lasting impact it has on sports/fashion culture today. By looking at these different artifacts from the 1980s, you will gain a sense of the trends that emerged originally and how they still exist in our culture today. The exhibit portrays the imprint of athlete sponsorships on individuals’ choices and brand affiliations. From the iconic sneakers worn by basketball legends to the apparel lines worn by tennis stars, each athlete has its own way. The common thread connecting these artifacts is the intersection of sports, celebrity, and consumer culture. Choices made by athletes went far beyond just the playing field. Whether it was Michael Jordan donning the infamous red Nike sneakers on the basketball court or Andre Agassi wearing the colorful attire and headbands on the tennis court, each endorsement deal represented the way in which sponsorship deals tried to leave the consumers with an imprint in their minds. This still exists in today’s world which is why this exhibit is so monumental. Think of Tom Brady and the “TB12” company he started. The company is known for trying to help athletes maximize their health and the mental aspect of sports (Alfano, 2024). Because of the beliefs of the company, most people associate those same beliefs with Brady. He is stereotyped to be an extremely healthy person. As you journey through this experience, think about how this relates to the intersection of sports, celebrity, and consumer culture, and think about the legacy these athletes left for future generations.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
