Founded after the crusades in 1099 to care for sick and injured pilgrims, the religious military Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem played a significant role in shaping Malta. This itinerary takes you to Valletta, the city founded by the Order in 1566 and today, Malta's cosmopolitan center. Named the 2018 <a href='https://valletta2018.org/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow ugc noopener noreferrer'>European Capital of Culture</a>, Valletta offers a thriving cultural scene with vibrant festivals, contemporary art, noteworthy dining, and so much more. The Order of St. John arrived in Malta in 1522 needing a new home after Ottoman Turks captured Rhodes, where they had thrived for 200 years. After warding off the Ottomans once again in 1565, the Knights began building their capital city. Napoleon drove the Order out of Malta in 1798, and subsequently, they set up headquarters in Rome, where they remained. But the Knights' impact on Valletta can be seen throughout the city to this day.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
