Sigma male culture, defined as the environment surrounding promoting self-reliance and masculinity among male teens online, is a phenomenon in the Oakton community. It is a reaction against “Alpha male culture,” a debunked social hierarchy study where an “Alpha” presides at the top of the pyramid. Alpha males are traditionally good-looking, extroverted, and materially successful. However, if one lacks looks, social skills, or other characteristics of the Alpha male, yet wants to remain dominant in their hierarchy, they would consider themselves a “Sigma” male. The term “Sigma male” comes from Christian far-right nationalist Theodore Robert Beale, who describes it as “an introverted Alpha male who likes to ‘play by his own rules.’” Sigmas believe that since they lack traits of an Alpha male, they must be more intelligent to get a leg up in the competition. This egocentric worldview is only appealing to a very specific group of people: heterosexual men who enforce traditional gender roles in their worldview.
