The San Rafael Canal Landing was built in 1817 near present day Montecito Plaza, upon the founding of San Rafael-- as it was the quickest way to travel around the bay. It took multiple years to complete the original wharf, but the waterfront functioned as a major transportation hub for the city. In 1908, an even larger initiative began to not only dredge the canal, but to construct bulkheads on both sides of the canal near the wharves. The development and fact that this area was vital for trade and communication made this land extremely important. Creeks into San Rafael continued to be developed, all the way into the current downtown area. Multiple wharves would be created through the early and mid 1900s, making the waterfront canal an irreplaceable facet of life in the initial days of the city. Beside the chief form of transportation before the development of roadways and bridges, the Canal also functioned as a gathering place to swim and socialize, according to the Marin History Museum. The importance of the Canal area would continue to grow as the later 1900s approached-- despite many of the previously dug creeks getting filled in. Development was on the horizon.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
