Timeline: The Spanish Flu, also known as the 1918 Influenza Pandemic, was one of the deadliest global pandemics in history, affecting millions of people worldwide. Yet, it did have its benefits despite the horrific consequences. The pandemic was caused by an unusual strain of the H1N1 influenza A virus. It lasted from 1918 to 1919, although its impact stretched the entire decade. As soldiers returned home after the war, the virus spread globally, affecting people in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The sickness caused tissue damage, bacterial infections, and respiratory failure (Fujimura, Purple Death: The Great Flu of 1918). It is estimated that the Spanish flu infected about one-third of the world’s population—roughly 500 million people—in a span of less than a year (Fujimura, Purple Death: The Great Flu of 1918). Economic disruption was widespread; the global economy, already affected by World War I, faced additional setbacks due to the pandemic (The Coconino Sun, 1918). Social unrest and fear were prevalent; people avoided public spaces, businesses shut down, and cities implemented quarantines, closed schools, and banned public gatherings (The Coconino Sun, 1918). There was little understanding of how the virus spread, and there were no effective treatments. Public health campaigns promoted strict hygiene and disinfection of public spaces, yet the lack of vaccines and antiviral drugs meant there were no direct medical interventions to defeat the virus (The Coconino Sun, 1918). Because of all of these deadly unknowns, the pandemic led scientists to gain a better understanding in virology, especially concerning how respiratory viruses spread and how influenza vaccines should be developed. There were swift educational advancements in these fields revolving around viruses and disease, in turn creating a more progressive and knowledgable atmosphere on the topics. The desire to learn more and formulate solutions within medicine were at their peak.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
