The role of the modern artist in society became increasingly complex near the turn of the 20th century, and Viennese composer Arnold Schoenberg, perhaps more than any other musician of the first half of the twentieth-century, pushed music into the future. Two early works, Five Orchestral Pieces, Opus 16, and Pierrot Lunaire, Opus 21, which employ compositional devices like klangfarbenmelodie (sound-color melody) and sprecshtimme (speech song), shook the world. Because of Schoenberg's iconoclastic musical ideas and compositional techniques, he was often rebuffed by critics and mocked by audiences; however, Schoenberg remained steadfast in support of his movement toward modernity, and away from the romanticism of the nineteenth century. In essence, he refused to become ensnared by the past. Though Schoenberg and late Romantic composer, Gustav Mahler were close associates and friends, Schoenberg moved toward writing for smaller ensembles, composing atonal pieces, and eventually developing his twelve-tone technique. His two major Viennese student disciples, Anton Webern and Alban Berg, became famous, if controversial, composers in their own right. The three men, referred to as the Second Viennese School, turned music irreversibily toward modernism. During the first thirty years of the century, Schoenberg not only endured artistic controversy, but antisemitism. As Vienna became more inhospitable toward Jewish citizens, Berg & Webern, were labelled degenerates because of their association with their teacher, and in 1933, Schoenberg arranged to leave Europe to escape the rising tide of Nazism. After a brief time in Boston, he moved to California and taught at the University of California at Los Angeles from 1936-1944. While he lived in the United States, both of his disciples died prematurely. In 1934, Berg died from sepsis caused by an insect bite, and Webern died at 61 after being mistakenly shot by an American soldier in Mittersill, Austria.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
