The years following the First World War were turbulent and characterized by change, which one might argue was most deeply felt in Germany. Having lost the war and thus being made to pay massive reparations, the German people shifted away from their faith in the Kaiser, who would abdicate on 9 November 1918. It was time for a new system of governance – this was the line of thinking that resulted in the establishment of the Weimar Republic. Under President Friedrich Ebert, Germany became a constitutional federal republic, and Germany was plunged into a period of uncertainty. While some had hoped for radical change that the Ebert government did not seem to provide, others grew intensely nostalgic for the days prior to the war What does this have to do with homosexuality? It was in the early 20th century that homosexual people entered the public eye in a meaningful way. While male homosexuality remained illegal in Germany until 1968/69, the Weimar Republic provided the conditions under which, for the first time, a homosexual press flourished. In the years after the war, print media, especially dailies and weeklies, grew increasingly popular. It was an image-saturated press, fed by consumers who craved new visual stimuli. Because the transition to a constitutional republic from a monarchy was so chaotic, the censorship laws that existed prior to the war were called into question, alongside the stringent censorship that had been implemented during wartime. Police were hesitant to enforce censorship because there was confusion about how to do so for a lengthy period, allowing a homosexual press to arise by 1924, and to exist relatively without difficulty until 1928, when censorship again began to be enforced, this time justified by a desire to protect youth from &quot;pornographic&quot; literature.

After one year, you will need to purchase an ArcGIS Online subscription to continue using ArcGIS StoryMaps. Check out the StoryMaps <link>retirement page</link> for more information on the ArcGIS Online subscription options.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
