Sula, Toni Morrison's 1973 novel, tells the story of a place called The Bottom and two Black girls, Nel Wright and Sula Peace, who are bonded by friendship and separated by differences and circumstance. They live in a Black neighborhood that sits above the rural white town in Medallion, Ohio and is referred to as The Bottom. In following the stories of Nel, Sula, and members of their community within The Bottom, Morrison's novel uses the environmental landscape as a mechanism in exploring and bringing to light the issues of racism, trauma, life and death, and self-realization inherent in their lived experiences. Nature and the elements of the earth like water, dirt, mud, and leaves often parallel and are linked to the experience of African Americans within the novel. It informs and shapes how they move throughout the world. This project works to unearth how the experiences of African Americans in Sula become materialized through their relationship and interaction with the natural world around them.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Try changing the paragraph font, and see what happens to this text.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
