Studies reflect that rapid rates of urbanization are being experienced by countries around the world (Boustan et al., 2013). This is a trend we experience here, in the U.S. Until 1920, the majority of the U.S. lived in rural settings. Since then, the urban population has increased at an incredible clip, and projections show by 2030, 85% of people living here will reside in cities (United State - Urbanization 2020 | Statista, 2022). While the density of urban centers allows might allow for efficient use of resources and can create economic and cultural hubs; the built environment can make it difficult to experience nature, especially truly wild places.In acknowledgement of this widened divide between humans and nature, cities have focused on incorporating greenspace while simultaneously placing greater emphasis on providing multi-modal travel options and improving walkability (Silva et al., 2018). Pfeiffer et al. (2020) conducted a study regarding Phoenix regional access to transit, neighborhood walkability, and greenspace access and their relationship with life satisfaction. Overall, residents with higher life satisfaction scores were more likely to reside in more walkable neighborhoods, experience greater transit access, and live closer to natural spaces. This suggests that investment in this type of design can improve urban dweller wellbeing.

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
