The first thing to note about the history of the blues, is that there was no one chronicling the history of the blues as it happened. The origins of the blues is organic and intrinsic to the emotions of the people who started it and the environments they inhabited. The blues has a different meaning to everyone. Some find it self-pitying, others liberating. Some African Americans feel that the blues is the last remnant of plantation life and find it embarrassing. Others feel that it is a rich part of their cultural heritage. One of the earliest uses of the term “the blues” appeared on December 14th, 1862 in a journal entry by Charlotte Fortten who, at the time, was a young black woman born free and working as a teacher to slaves in South Carolina. She used it to refer to a mindset of melancholy and loneliness. The blues was born from songs that were sung by slaves while working plantation fields. One leader may set the tone and pace with the others answering in unison. This sort of leader-chorus singing can be traced back to its roots in Africa where this style of singing was commonplace. While every other aspect of the African’s culture was meant to be stripped and their spirit broken, slave drivers allowed this sort of “field-hollering” because it actually proved to be to their advantage as it often saved their slaves from falling into depression and dying.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
