In the early twentieth century, the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's capital, began an extensive, reformative project to beautify not only its reputation but also its physical appearance. Through the "City Beautiful" movement, Harrisburg saw the demise of the Old Eighth Ward, a multiethnic community situated to the East of the capitol building and relative capitol complex. Eventually, from the 1930s to the 1950s, the communities north of the capitol on North, Briggs, and Forster Streets were demolished, making way for parkland, a new State Museum, Archives, and office space. Through this story map, I will explain the history of the Second Capitol Expansion through the research that I have done over the fall semester at the Pennsylvania State Archives, Historical Society of Dauphin County, as well as different databases like Newspapers.com.
