Unfortunately, this problem is only getting worse as the support systems commonly relied upon during droughts are evaporating as the crisis continues. Driving this is climate change. As the planet warms, weather everywhere is pushed to further extremes, and in California, climate change has exacerbated the effects of the current drought. For one, higher temperatures increase evaporation rates of groundwater sources, hence there is less capturable runoff for storage. Climate change also whittles away at average snowpack, resulting in a major loss in snow melt which is a significance source of California's water reserves that are meant to sustain the state through drier months (Mount et al., 2021).Climate change has not only worsened the problem but also forced the hand of state response to this crisis. As smaller local water supplies dry up first, the state has had to deploy drought assistance measures that involve delivering water in large trucks to areas that are drying up (State of California, 2022). While this immediate action must be taken to ensure citizens have access to water, it is not a sustainable, long-term solution, and the negative impacts of climate change cannot be lessened when large trucks are used as a solution to a problem which they also fuel.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
