In this research paper, I intend to connect primary sources (evidence that is both time-sensitive and authentic) and historical events by describing how the impact of the Treaty of Versailles on ordinary Germans between 1920 and 1939 led to the rise of fascism and the outbreak of World War II. On June 28, 1919, a peace treaty was signed at the Palace of Versailles in France by the victorious powers of World War I, led by Britain and France. The treaty contained many unfavorable and humiliating conditions for the defeated Germany. For example, reparations (a total of about 132 billion gold marks, equivalent to about 6,370 tons of gold or $100 billion in modern value), territorial reductions (Germany lost large tracts of territory, including Alsace and Lorraine to France, some eastern territories to the newly formed Poland, and lost all overseas colonies), and armaments (limiting the size of the German army to 100,000 men, prohibiting the possession of air forces, submarines, and heavy weapons, and a 50 km area east of the Rhine River became a demilitarized zone). These treaties were formed because France and Britain were frightened by the losses caused by World War I, which made them desperate to weaken Germany. This led to huge loopholes and irrationalities in these clauses and indirectly caused the outbreak of World War II. Ferdinand Foch, a French marshal during World War I, prophetically said after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles: &quot;This is not peace, this is a 20-year armistice.&quot; Foch believed that although the treaty temporarily ended the war, it did not really solve the political and economic problems in Europe and would eventually lead to another war. Exactly 20 years later, in 1939, the outbreak of World War II proved his point of view correct (Keegan).

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
