What is modernity? What does it mean in the context of art? What exactly is “Modern Art”? These questions naturally rise within the minds of new learners of art history. When one hears the term “Modern”, it is quickly inferred to have a meaning of present time, thus, making people believe that Modern Art encompasses the art created in the present time they are standing within. Though somewhat true, but not fully correct. Modern art, the one written in the historical timelines starting from the early prehistoric era all the way to the 21st century, is a category assigned to the artworks ranging from the 1860s to the 1970s. Assigned the name of being modern, it was quite frankly the artwork “relating to, or characteristic of the present or the recent past” (Merriam-Webster). It is a time period within the art industry that challenged the traditional notions that art had to realistically depict the world. Works began breaking conventional ways, pushing the boundaries of subject matter, material usage, and concept in a way that was experimental and often seen as radical. Ultimately when assessing what the modern art is, it can be argued as a movement within the creative arts historical timeline that is founded upon the idea of breaking art societal norms, however, most importantly, the time of experimental communication of “what is visibly there, and what is not, but still ever present.”
