Looking through the many recipes I researched, one specifically stood out to me: Savillum (Roman Cheesecake). Growing up, my mom and I often made cheesecake together, so encountering an ancient version of this dessert immediately caught my attention. In ancient Roman society, Savillum was more than a dessert. It was often a sacred offering to household spirits, thus enjoyed as a special treat during communal meals. The historical significance of this dish makes it a fascinating topic, further allowing me to learn more about Roman culinary and religious traditions. As for the translation of the measurements, ancient recipes, like those in Cato’s On Agriculture, often list ingredients in terms of general quantities rather than precise measurements. This forced me to interpret ratios based on research. For example, the instructions included terms like “modicum,” which was used to describe how much flour to use. Furthermore, the recipe called for “a modicum of flour,” which through research, I found to be ½ pound or 1 cup of flour. Additionally, modernizing the recipe meant deciding which ingredients to substitute. For example, I decided to use ricotta cheese because there wasn’t an exact cheese specified. It closely mimics the texture and mild flavor of the original ingredient: Roman sheep’s milk cheese. While learning more about the dish, I began to see it as more than just a recipe, as it became a representation of Roman values and rituals. This connection extends into literary and historical sources, such as Ovid’s poetic allusions to food and mythological offerings. Savillum reflects broader themes in Roman society, from its practical preparation to its spiritual and communal importance. By recreating this dish, I aim to not only appreciate its flavor, but to also uncover its place in the Roman worldview.

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
