Sport played a major role in the lives of those imprisoned at any of the 10 Japanese internment camps during world war 2. Recreational activities like baseball allowed the residents of the camps to experience some of the joys of being a free person while not being in a free environment. Sport gave residents the ability to be prideful in their team and express a sense of competitiveness. It gave the competitors an outlet for the frustration they were experiencing from the living conditions they were in. Baseball quickly became the most popular sport in the camps as a lot of Japanese already played in Japanese American baseball leagues referred to as &quot;nisei leagues&quot;. This is similar to the more well known term &quot;negro leagues&quot; for African Americans. Other activities popular with Japanese people in the camps were some traditional games like the board games Go and Shogi. Sports like softball, basketball, and volleyball were also relatively popular in the camps too, with women getting their own softball and volleyball leagues (Regalado, 1992). Women&apos;s sporting events at the camps doubled as social events where men and women could meet. Because of this, when women would present themselves in a &quot;cute&quot; way, the women&apos;s sporting clubs would get more attention in the crowds and newspapers (Regalado, 2000). Sport in internment camps would end with the closure of the last camp in 1946, but the cultural impacts this had within Japanese American communities can still be observed today (War Relocation Centers, 2023).

StoryMaps.com Retirement and Migration to ArcGIS Online

After one year, you will need to purchase an ArcGIS Online subscription to continue using ArcGIS StoryMaps. Check out the StoryMaps <link>retirement page</link> for more information on the ArcGIS Online subscription options.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
