Zainichi is a Japanese word that means “residing in Japan.” This term holds a socialized meaning of foreign, temporary, and exclusionary. Additionally, Zainichi refers to a Korean ethnic minority group that has resided in Japan since 1910 due to the large migration wave from the Korean Peninsula that came during Japan's colonial reign (Lie, 2009). Japanese society and government pushed for the assimilation and naturalization of this minority group since they arrived. Historically, Zainichi have experienced social, political, and economic constraints that have led to disproportionate (and sometimes no) access to services and opportunities within an urban environment1. Due to these inequalities and persistent discrimination, many ethnic Koreans chose to naturalize to receive Japanese citizenship. However, there is still a large Zainichi population in Japan who have been able to honour their culture and history regardless of the social and political reproductions. To explore this dynamic, this tour will examine sites that have shown significance in how Zainichi Koreans have been able to create space for themselves in an urban landscape. Specifically, using ideas in emotional geography in the creation of nostalgia and belonging. I would like to investigate the ambiguity of belonging and sense of place in an urban ethnic landscape, as well as see how these spaces and active social efforts have continuously shaped their community.  I will critically analyze four locations in the Ikuno Ward, a Korean neighbourhood, in Osaka, Japan that will foreground efforts made by Zainichi to create physical and emotional space for their community in Osaka and greater Japan.
