Despite many people&apos;s beliefs about the structure of the Underground Railroad, recent research has revealed that it was not a single interconnected system, but instead mainly small pockets of individuals within communities who had a mutual goal of supporting runaway slaves seeking freedom in northern parts of the United States and Canada. Assisting runaway slaves on their journeys to freedom began in the late eighteenth century and continued to gain momentum up to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.In the initial stages, the majority of communities that aided runaway slaves were Quaker. However, as time passed, a wide variety of people became involved. As the system grew it became known as the “Underground Railroad” in 1831 due to the emergence of railroads throughout the nation at the time.  The system also used terms based on railroading: the homes where fugitive slaves stayed were “stations” that were run by “stationmasters,” those who helped raise funds for the cause were referred to as “stockholders,” and those who assisted the runaways on their journeys came to be known as “conductors.”

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
