Islamophobia is still very much relevant in the United States today in the twenty-first century. The Muslim population is still labeled “Terrorists” despite their tremendous contribution to the growth to their nation. From the Revolutionary War to WWII, Muslims have fought and died for a country that holds fear of the Muslim population and where stereotypes remain strong. Since the 911 attacks, Muslims have been under physical and psychological attack by the American public and scrutinized by the Western media in its portrayal of Muslims in the West and abroad, which played a significant role in ultimately influencing internal politics and political developments in Muslim countries. Some in the Muslim community experienced being detained at many of the U.S. airports and were subject to harassment and illegal searches. This effect is a defining part of the idea of the pharmacotic war: Perhaps the first symptom that a pharmacotic process was in play following September 11 was the overwhelming of demonizing and scapegoating attacks directed against American Arabs and Muslims that immediately followed the terrorist attacks, which were accompanied by calls for retaliation against Muslims, even Muslim civilians, abroad. In Edward E. Curtis&apos;s “Muslim Americans in the Military: Centuries of Service,” dated 2016, After the 9/11 attacks, hate crimes against Muslims soared by 1,600 percent. Some Muslims, or those who looked like Muslims, were attacked and/or murdered. Some women wearing headscarves were spat on. Many were detained because they were suspected of ties to terrorism. In his book, the author gives accounts of some Muslim&apos;s experiences with Islamophobia while serving in the military. The Al-Qaeda regime and its leader, Osama bin Laden, justified their attacks as retribution for U.S. attacks on Muslims and their support of countries in the Middle East that they deemed corrupt. Then-president Bush ordered military forces to invade Afghanistan for their indirect participation in the 9/11 attacks as well as Iraq, which he claimed had weapons of mass destruction. This was a lie, but it fostered fear in Americans&apos; minds at home and abroad. Muslim Americans, military, and civilians were fearful of the potential backlash of the American citizens prejudging the Muslim population. Those attacks were costly to the Muslim population as some women reported having been spat on, and many were rounded up and detained because they were suspected of having ties to terrorism. One young man was murdered because “he looked like one.” Petty Officer First Class Fatima Ahmed, who was in the U.S. Navy, expressed her fears, “I thought we were going to be rounded up and put in Japanese-style internment camps; I was terrified I’d be locked up.” Ahmed said she remembered when, during Ramadan, her supervisor would intentionally eat in front of her. She says, “The challenge was always being seen as if you didn’t belong and not knowing if people you interacted with didn’t trust you because of your religion.” Many other Muslims serving in the military felt the same as Ahmed. “It’s the feeling you can’t be American enough when you can’t get more American than military service. It’s the raw hatred that some people have, out of complete ignorance. When they see ISIS, they think that’s what Muslims are, what all of us are, which is incredibly wrong.”

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
