Water scarcity is an immediate and urgent challenge in Colorado and across the American Southwest. As population growth continues and the stress of climate change worsens, water providers are considering different options for reducing water demand, such as the conversion of water-thirsty landscapes to water-wise landscapes. This story map shows the extent of irrigated turf (water-thirsty landscape) in the right-of-way (ROW) of two of the biggest cities in Colorado – Denver and Aurora.The two-decade megadrought in the southwest United States is forcing municipalities, water providers, individual citizens, and state and federal legislatures to consider major changes in how water is captured, stored, used, distributed, and conserved. One popular method that many municipalities are working on – within and beyond Colorado – is non-essential (also called non-functional) turf conversion and replacement. While some irrigated turf areas are functional, the fact is that many grasses that need irrigation are used in areas that no one uses, which represents a serious issue for a semi-arid urban region like the Colorado Front Range. These areas of under-utilized grasses present a relatively easy opportunity to decrease water consumption and provide other ecosystem benefits by converting to water-wise landscapes.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
