Upon contact with settlers, Indigenous people across North America were subjected to historical dispossession, forced removal, and the plundering of their cultural heritage. The fields of archaeology and anthropology emerged in a context of colonialism, where Indigenous peoples were seen as a &quot;vanishing race&quot; and their cultural artifacts and remains were stolen to glorify colonial achievements. This has resulted in museums worldwide unethically holding Indigenous cultural objects, failing to acknowledge their origins or return them to their rightful owners. On November 16, 1990 President George Bush passed the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act to address this. This legislation is a step in the right direction as it addresses the colonial histories of museums and the &quot;ethical binders of archaeology&quot; (Nash, 2020). This law aims to foster collaboration between Indigenous people, scientists, and curators, and to help Indigenous tribes recover from the emotional and spiritual trauma resulting from the loss of their cultural heritage. It is estimated that 67,000 ancestral human remains, 1.9 funerary objects, and 15,000 sacred objects have since been repatriated, but thousands of objects remain in museums.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
