I had always known that my mother did not have an easy childhood when she moved to Ireland. What I never really knew was the depths of the conflict around the Troubles. Of course, with my family being from the Republic of Ireland, they never had nice things to say about the North. But again, I never knew to what extent. I finally got the chance to talk about all this more in depth with my mom, and I was taken completely by surprise. When I had initially brought up the matter, she basically just brushed it off- as if they never heard anything about the conflict. But when I kept asking, it had also made her realize how her experiences were not actually normal. My mother, at 10 years old in 1978, had no choice but to comply when her parents said they were moving back to Ireland. My mom loved her American life, she loved to play with all her cousins. Furthermore, she loved having plumbing, electricity, and running water. She would no longer have that when they moved, and could not understand the sense of it. The reason for the upheaval of their beloved lives was to go move in with my grandpa's aunt, to take care of her land and take care of her. She lived in an extremely old home, as you can tell from the other information. As a 10 year old girl, so many things are changing as it is. To add onto that, moving to another country is so much to handle, and then on top of THAT, no longer having a stove, or even a toilet. I can never fathom the sense of it.

This story includes several of the pieces you might use in your own story–like paragraphs, buttons, separators, and more. To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Try changing the paragraph font, and see what happens to this text.

Your theme’s accent color is used in both quotes (see above) and separators (below). If you add an express map to your story, your drawn features will use the accent color too.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
