Across West and Central Africa, only three out of 10 babies under six months are exclusively breastfed (UNICEF, 2018). Most breastfed babies are given other liquids and foods - in most cases water is given. In 2018, stakeholders recognized that a concerted effort across the region was necessary to achieve the World Health Assembly 2025 goal of at least 50% exclusive breastfeeding. It could not be "<a href='https://www.aliveandthrive.org/en/news/business-as-usual-will-not-suffice-to-improve-exclusive-breastfeeding-in-west-africa' target='_blank' rel='nofollow ugc noopener noreferrer'>business as usual</a>."In response, UNICEF, WHO and Alive & Thrive launched Stronger With Breastmilk Only, a regional effort to increase rates of national exclusive breastfeeding across the sub-region. Since then, many national nutrition programmes have launched the initiative at the country-level. Progress to date in the 10 countries that have launched the initiative is presented below.
