Phoebus traces its origins back to the Native American village of Kikotan (sometimes spelled Kecoughtan), a 16th century Algonquian settlement centered just west of present-day Downtown Phoebus. The English officially colonized the native people and their lands in 1610, after which the primarily agrarian settlement was known for over two centuries as Strawberry Banks and Mill Creek. The grid-like street pattern we know today did not form until 1871, at which time it took the name Chesapeake City. The construction of the C&amp;O railroad during 19th century Reconstruction helped spur the town&apos;s growth. Entrepreneurialism flourished, led by both Union veterans and former enslaved peoples. In 1900, the town was renamed Phoebus in honor of Harrison Phoebus, who developed the renowned Hygeia Hotel at Old Point Comfort about a half mile south. In the 21st century, Phoebus has experienced a revitalization of its commercial corridor and accompanying residential neighborhood. The Phoebus Historic District was recognized in 2006 and Phoebus became a Virginia Main Street community in 2021. Today, the neighborhood showcases a mix of architectural styles ranging from Victorian to the Modern era.

This story includes several of the pieces you might use in your own story–like paragraphs, buttons, separators, and more. To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Try changing the paragraph font, and see what happens to this text.

Your theme’s accent color is used in both quotes (see above) and separators (below). If you add an express map to your story, your drawn features will use the accent color too.
