Intro: Zora Neale Hurston was greatly impacted by both the Harlem Renaissance and the Great Depression. Hurston and other African Americans felt incentivised to rewrite the past and create a new authentic name for the Black community. The Harlem Renaissance emerged, and authentic African American culture was brought into the spotlight. African Americans forever changed the way they were viewed; amidst racism, they still performed and fought for their community. After the end of the roaring twenties and the period of the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Depression emerged. The Great Depression resulted in employment rates significantly dropping. Jobs were now incredibly difficult to find; the Works Progress Administration, known as the WPA, resulted from this job deficit. When Hurston was tasked by the WPA to create guidebooks for the state of Florida, she incorporated authentic African American language, utilizing eye dialect. Eye dialect gives us a personal sense of the Black community, and what makes it unique. These certain spellings and pronunciations gave the Black community a voice, contradicting the past where their voices were incredibly limited. As a result of the guidebooks and the idea of eye dialect, Hurston was inspired to create Their Eyes Were Watching God. This novel, filled with eye dialect and authentic Black culture, is a more personal version of the guidebooks; the book showcases the development from slavery to independently-governed Black towns. Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God is an important, personal work giving the Black community a voice that flowed out of the Harlem Renaissance and Great Depression.

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
