The fracturing of Cape Town during apartheid was the result of deliberate policies aimed at enforcing racial segregation, economic inequality, and white supremacy. This process was rooted in colonial legacies that had already established patterns of racial exclusion. The 1913 Natives Land Act, for instance, restricted land ownership for Black South Africans, creating a foundation for apartheid’s later policies. By the early 20th century, Cape Town was already racially segregated, with wealthy white residents living in central areas and suburbs, while Black and Coloured communities were pushed to the city’s informal settlements.Under apartheid, segregation intensified with the 1950 Group Areas Act, which forcibly removed Black and Coloured people from neighborhoods designated for white residents. This act devastated communities like District Six, which was declared a whites-only zone in 1966. Over 60,000 residents were displaced to distant, underdeveloped areas like Langa, Gugulethu, and Mitchells Plain. These removals disrupted social networks, destroyed livelihoods, and relegated non-white communities to poorly resourced, overcrowded townships on the city's outskirts.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
