For my final project, I wanted to pursue research into my own culture to try and possibly answer some of my questions about my identity. I identify as Filipino-American. I was born in San Diego, California in the United States to two Filipino immigrant parents who immigrated from the Philippines to multiple countries around the world with the US Navy. Since both my parents and I are far from what most people would consider your typical “Filipino”, I know very little about my ethnic background and the history of the Philippines. As I duty not only to myself, I found it important to educate myself about their stories and uncover the untold history that is kept away from the history books. Since we are specifically covering just the 20th century, I believe that it was important to start from the very beginning when Spanish colonization in the Philippines finally ended and how the Philippines-American War was the product of the Philippines&apos; brief period of independence. Most of the events I chose to include primarily occurred in the Philippines, however, it is important to note that the United States played a significant role throughout. Without their assistance throughout the years, the Philippines wouldn’t have become the independent country they are today. Furthermore, through this final project, I would like to investigate how imperialism has affected the Philippines and the Filipinos and how it has caused Filipinos to leave their home country and start a new journey in the United States. By researching the overlooked history of Filipino immigration throughout the 20th century, it can be understood how the creation of a nation and its people isn’t linear but rather a journey with endless possibilities.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
