During the late 1800s, instances of infanticide, the killing of infants, were sadly not rare occurrences. The Charleston News and Courier documented over 53 cases of alleged infanticide between 1873 and 1899. Often, the women accused in these cases were portrayed as either mentally unstable or neglectful mothers, painting them as morally flawed individuals. Many of these women lacked support systems, access to birth control or abortion, and options like leaving their infants at an almshouse or with family. Instead, they found themselves in desperate situations, trying to juggle employment, avoid community condemnation, or feeling ill-equipped for motherhood.During the Reconstruction period, the media held significant sway in shaping public perceptions of infanticide. Newspapers frequently depicted the ideal mother as white and middle-class, casting judgment on those who deviated from this standard. As a result, societal views on infanticide were largely shaped by prevailing notions of acceptable female behavior. Yet, beyond gender expectations, factors such as social class, poverty, age, and race also heavily influenced how cases of infanticide were seen.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
