In 1887, Falls Church took action to retrocede land back to Fairfax County. In an act of clear gerrymandering, and racial exclusion the retrocession of land is not an act of slow violence. This southern section of Falls Church held a significant portion of the towns Black population. Whether racial relations had been historically good in Falls Church or not as Gernand states above, the choice by the Town of Falls Church to cede land primarily inhabited by the Black community demonstrates how the town council and the white community viewed their Black neighbors. They were still willing to vote in favor of such actions when it came time. The action of ceding land back to Fairfax in 1887 created a stark division in the community. Black communities like &quot;The Hill&quot;, and Southgate were now removed from Falls Church, cutting their voting power. Tinner Hill on the other hand was divided in half. While the majority of the broader Tinner Hill community remained in Falls Church, the land that the Tinner Family originally settled on was cut down the middle.

This story includes several of the pieces you might use in your own story–like paragraphs, buttons, separators, and more. To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Try changing the paragraph font, and see what happens to this text.
