Over the course of the quarter, I have covered in my previous three research projects the cause of the Boer War in South Africa, the role that it played in neo-colonialism, and how it inevitably became a catalyst for turning South Africa into an apartheid state. Yet it is to be acknowledged that the South Africa that we know today—though still overcoming the aftermath of systemic and institutionalized oppression—has made significant strides towards building a more equal, non-racist society, mostly through political transformation, economic and legal reform, and improved access to social welfare and education for all. But to put things into context of how South Africa got to where it is now, presently in 2024, we must first look at everything that took place within the 20th-century that led to its current constitutional democracy. The major events of 20th-century South Africa, such as the Boer War and the rise and fall of apartheid, demonstrate how colonial conflicts and racial hierarchies shaped not only South Africa&apos;s political and social landscape, but also broader patterns of resistance and inequality across the African continent. These historical developments continue to echo in the 21st-century, as South Africa and other African countries contend with the legacies of colonialism, systemic racism, and efforts towards reconciliation and equitable governance.

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
