Akron, Ohio was established in 1825 by General Simon Perkins. Perkins, who owned most of the land, chose to donate it so that the canal could be built in the city. The historic Ohio and Erie Canal would connect Akron to Cleveland by way of the Cuyahoga River. The canal would also connect Akron to the city of Portsmouth by way of the Ohio River. Akron became a canal town and played a major role in trade and industry. The canal system would soon be replaced by the railroads and the rubber industry would come on the scene. As the Ohio and Erie Canal connected Akron to Cleveland and beyond, the rubber industry connected workers to jobs. Akron, which was known as The Rubber Capital of the World, boasted 19th and 20th century factories which once housed thousands of workers and Banbury mills. The mills bore to some, the stench and to others the aroma, of hot rubber. No matter what was thought of it, the hot rubber had an unmistakable distinct scent all its own that could be smelled in the areas near the plants.

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
