Hayao Miyazaki is a Japanese animator, director, author, and manga artist, among other titles. In 1985, he co-founded Studio Ghibli, a Tokyo-based animation studio. His work includes common themes such as human interactions with nature, the value of craftsmanship, and preserving peace in a violent world. (Wikipedia)My personal favorites of Miyazaki's films are Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Howl's Moving Castle, which all performed successfully in the Japanese film industry and the international entertainment space. The focus of this assignment, Shuna's Journey, is a watercolor-illustrated graphic novel written by Miyazaki in 1985. The creation of Shuna's Journey touches on a foundational aspect of Silk Road studies: the intermingling of space and time through literature, as represented by Bakhtin's concept of the chronotope. Through writing this story, Miyazaki, who lives in what was the most eastern end of the historical Silk Road, resurrects an ancient Tibetan story that also resembles Journey to the West. While Moretti argued that it is impossible to map geographies imagined by characters in novels, I will attempt to do so here. (Moretti) Through an analysis of Shuna's Journey, a reader gets a glimpse of the relationship between the historical and current Silk Roads, and the influence of age-old tales on modernly produced allegories.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
