The term "counterculture" is broadly associated with social and political movements of the 1960s centered on nonconformity, peace, love, and challenging authority. Expressions of the broader theme of counterculture include the antiwar protests, the Summer of Love and the sexual revolution, the free speech movement, and the emergence of a prominent "drug" culture. These revolutions started in the 1960s and have continued to be fought and expanded as young Americans continued to expand the definition of equality and their goals. The origin of modern-day "Counterculture" comes from the work of poets, authors, and academics of the "Beat Generation." The Beat Generation refers to the generation of thinkers who began to challenge societal norms through poetry, novels, and how they dressed and talked. While these changes were incremental in comparison to the nonconformity of the 1960s, they marked the first time the American youth questioned sexual, social norms, and societal inequality and inspired a future generation.  In many ways, the Beat Generation embodied the feeling of "why don't you just leave me alone, " written by New York Times columnist John Holmes in 1952.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
