Lake Texcoco was one of the five interconnected lakes in the region of the Valley of Mexico. It was a natural lake with already shallow waters and fluctuating water levels.This lake was central to Aztec civilization as the Aztecs, sometimes referred to as the Mexica, established Tenochtitlan, their capital, on an island in lake Texcoco in around 1325. Tenochtitlan quickly came to be known as the heart of the Aztec empire. Other than Tenochtitlan, the lake was home to several other cities and states including Acolhua and Texcoco. These cities were of course connected and therefore were involved in political alliances and conflicts which ended up shaping the region's history. The lake was a strong influence in local lifestyle and played a crucial role for the Aztec’s agricultural techniques, including the chinampas. Additionally, because of the seasonal flooding, a series of dykes and canals had to be built. After the lake and the land surrounding it was conquered by the Spaniards, the lake was changed forever. It was drained to prevent flooding and continued to be drained until it was unrecognizable and got to the mush land state it exists as today. Although it may not be what it was before, lake Texcoco and its indigenous nations are crucial to Mexican heritage and forever will be.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Your theme’s accent color is used in both quotes (see above) and separators (below). If you add an express map to your story, your drawn features will use the accent color too.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
