What is Oryza Glaberrima? African Black Rice “oryza glaberrima” was first archaeologically domesticated in West Africa and dates back as far as 3,500 years ago. African rice’s domestication began as a polycentric domestication of five different genetic clusters in the Inner Niger Delta region. The African Black Rice strand has been genetically tested and has been found to have connections to over 90 West African Rice varieties. However, over the last 2,000 years its cultivation has declined due to the introduction of the Asian Rice species.African Black Rice didn’t reside in the Americas until the Columbian Exchange, which became an importation method across the Atlantic of people and goods. The first voyage in the slave trade was in 1525 and lasted until 1866 with over 36,000 voyages. Along with the slave trade and importation, the Columbian Exchange imported mass amounts of goods to the Americas. On the West African coast the schematic distribution of crops aided in the exchange and importation of goods from the coast to the Americas, the biggest port being in West Central Africa. To gauge how mass the importation of goods was: over a 9 day period 8,200 pounds of rice were taken across the ocean and in a year around 60 million pounds of rice were imported. To sustain the slaves on their voyage they were given African foods and plants. On the ships there was 1 ton of foodstuff per 10 people and 60 gallons of water per person for 30-80 days of travel to cross the atlantic.
