One of the most commonly recognizable vase shapes from Ancient Greece is the Amphora. It is a large, storage-type vessel with a round body, a thin neck, and two handles on the side. The vase we are going to be discussing is called the Exekias Amphora. It features myths of Achilles fighting the Amazon Penthesilea on one side and Dionysos with Oinopion on the other. It is currently housed in the British Museum, though not on display. The imagery was painted in black figure, with hints of added red and white to provide more depth to details. It is attributed to the painter and potter Exekias; thus, the museum has it listed as “The Exekias Amphora.” Exekias was an artisan with roughly 167 pieces attributed to him in the Beazley Archive, a database of ancient pottery. The two stories on the vase are not connected, making it a fascinating vase. Examining both sides of the vase sparks questions about why the myth of Achilles killing the Amazon Penthesilea would be suitable to partner with a scene of Dionysos and his son. This object biography will discuss where this vase was found, what kind of imagery it features, and the style in which it was made.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
