Between 1920 and 1939, the invention of portable, handheld telephones, commonly referred to as mobile or cell phones, had not yet emerged in the form we know today. The telecommunication landscape during this period was primarily characterized by traditional wired telephones, and significant developments in handheld mobile phones would come much later. The 1920s and 1930s were marked by the widespread use and expansion of wired telephony systems in many parts of the world. These systems relied on physical telephone lines to connect calls. Telephone networks continued to expand, connecting urban and rural areas, and by the late 1930s, long-distance calls were becoming more common, but they still relied on wired infrastructure. The people of 1920s also knew just how much wire went into connecting millions of people with each other. One newspaper from April 18, 1924 notes how many wires were being used to allow for telecommunication. “Before the war, this company installed about 127,000,000 feet of wire each year. Because of the abnormal demands for service during the past several years, it has, during that period, installed an annual average of about 209,000,000 feet of wire. For 1924, it is estimated that 384,100,000 feet will be required, and during the next 5 year period 1,970,000,000 feet of wire.” This information was on the third page of the newspaper, so I do not know how important this information was to the public, but I am sure it was an important factor to getting to create wireless phones.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Quotes use the theme’s title font, but you can also choose one of several different styling options.

Your theme’s accent color is used in both quotes (see above) and separators (below). If you add an express map to your story, your drawn features will use the accent color too.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
