The Atlantic Dogwinkle (Nucella lapillus) has a distinctive, point, short, solid, and non-glossy shell. Typically, around 40mm (1.6in) but can grow up to 60mm (2.3in) in size (Charbonneau 2002). The shell color varies, including shades of white, orange, brown, grey, and purple. The thickness of their shells varies depending on their location (Watling 2003).   Dogwinkle that live on exposed shores with high wave action generally have thinner shells (due to low predator density), while those in locations with more predators tend to have thicker shells. Similar Species In Narragansetts Bay, the Atlantic dogwinkle often can get confused with other similar species. As a sea snail (Tritia nitida) is one of them, its sizes can vary from 33-34mm (1.3-1.4 inches), being smaller than the Atlantic dogwinkle (Zardoya 2021). Another species that can get confused is the channeled whelk (Busycotypus canaliculatus), which is larger than the dogwrinkle, reaching up to 228 mm (9 inches), and shares a similar color pallet (Massie 1998). Additionally, the Atlantic dogwinkle can be mistaken for the knobbed whelk (Busycon carica), a larger and more robust and elongated shell (Kraeuter 1994). Lastly, it can also confuse the Atlantic oyster drill (Eupleura caudata), which shares comparable size and color but different rough and more prolonged whorls with the Atlantic dogwinkle (Massie 1998).To distinguish between them, it is necessary to look at shell characteristics, opening color, and size differences.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
