One of the most important and impactful phenomena in visual arts history is the development of the Dutch school of painting during the 17th century. During this time, the Netherlands had only recently become a political state and was still suffering long-term effects from its war with Spain. However, the tiny nation gained enormous self-esteem by gaining independence from such a formidable opponent (National Gallery of Art, 2024). The people were deservedly proud of this achievement and intended to create a government that would honor its land, people, culture, and values in a way that would be remembered in future generations. The Dutch expressed their pride and honor in distinct cultural and social settings but most predominantly in their expressive artistic traditions. The National Gallery of Art provides a commendable collection of the country&apos;s 17th-century paintings and artworks, including works by era pioneers such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, Aelbert Cuyp, and Johannes Vermeer. These paintings provide the viewer with an almost accurate depiction of Amsterdam and the Netherlands during the 17th century, making them some of the most revered in European art history.

This story includes several of the pieces you might use in your own story–like paragraphs, buttons, separators, and more. To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Try changing the paragraph font, and see what happens to this text.

Quotes use the theme’s title font, but you can also choose one of several different styling options.

Your theme’s accent color is used in both quotes (see above) and separators (below). If you add an express map to your story, your drawn features will use the accent color too.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
