On July 16-17, 1918, the Romanov imperial family, who have been ruling the Russian Empire for over 300 years, were violentally murdered by the Bolsheviks. The exact moment we are focusing on is the night of their execution. Among those murdered was Nicholas II, the last Russian tsar, and his family which includes his wife Alexandra Feodorovna and his five children. The Bolsheviks were a far-left group of the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, and were led by Vladimir Lenin. They eventually became the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.The Romanov family was being held captive by the Bolshevik revolutionaries in the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. At this point, Nicholas II had already abdicated the throne following the February Revolution in 1917. The family had been moved around many houses secretly by the Bolsheviks, and during the night of their murder, they had been ordered to pack up and prepare to move to another location. However, this time they were ordered into the basement of the house. Nicholas II and his family were brutally shot multiple times and bayonetted until they were dead, and then disposed of. The execution was led by communist revolutionary Yakov Yurovsky, under direction of the Ural Regional Soviet.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Your theme’s accent color is used in both quotes (see above) and separators (below). If you add an express map to your story, your drawn features will use the accent color too.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
