Putting the Green Back in Galveston

Growing vegetables in our garden at O’Connell College Preparatory School, Galveston Texas
Goals: To learn about radiant energy and the sun's involvement in photosynthesis and to grow vegetables in the garden to be eaten and shared.
Activities conducted to achieve goals: background research, preparing the garden, planting the seeds, caring for and finally harvesting the vegetables to be eaten and shared with the community
Energy Content and Resources: NEED.org, Solar and Science of Energy
Student Leadership: Students were in charge of the preparation of the garden, final choice of seeds to be planted, fertilization, watering and sharing about the garden with elementary school visitors and parents who came to learn about urban gardening.
Community Education & Involvement in this Activity: Master Gardener helped with choices of seeds to be planted, Texas A&M helped to test the quality of the soil before planting.

Success of the garden and ability to prepare and share the produce

Helping to distribute food to those in need at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish, Galveston Texas in conjunction with the Galveston County Food Bank
Goals: To share with the community
Activities conducted to achieve goals:
Energy Content and Resources: NEED Solar information and tracing the energy content back to the Sun.
Student Leadership: Students were helping to pack up and distribute food to those in NEED in the community, including some of the produce they had grown in their school garden
Community Education & Involvement in this Activity: They distributed NEED coloring pages to families who had children that were there to collect food.
Evaluation Methods:

Sharing the Science Behind Recycling at the Farmer’s Market in Galveston
Goals: To share with the community the science behind recycling and to help educate them as to how recycling can help our community
Activities conducted to achieve goals: Explanations of how plastics are made and demonstrations of how plastics are floated out in recycling centers and examples of items that are made of recycled plastics
Energy Content and Resources: NEED Energy Curriculum, PE3 lab from the Offshore Energy Center, Chemistry in the Community Text book
Student Leadership: Students led the demonstrations and answered questions
They also showed examples of nurdles found on the beaches
Community Education & Involvement in this Activity: The community education was done with the people who were attending the Farmers market and the Farmers Market allowed us to use a booth for free for our public service of sharing about recycling
