The female nude is one of the most popular and revered historical art forms. Paintings of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, are so popular that this became the name for the entire category of historical nude female paintings. However, nudity has been a contentious subject through the ages, as it treads such a fine line between portrayals of the religious and ideal or portrayals of human vanity or lewdness. Following our timeline through recent history it is easy to see these combating ideas. The most historic paintings use women as a symbol of divine beauty, hence the representations and use of the name Venus, showing a figure that is idealized for onlookers. She is recognizable through idealized beauty, the presence of a cupid and her often relaxed or reclined pose. However, as time progresses on we begin to see more liberal representations of the naked female body. Up until recent history women were not encouraged to become professional, academically trained artists. Therefore the dominant viewpoint of the past was a male one, often a white male one, even when it came to female bodies. In recent history, however, we begin to see the reclamation of the female body through art, as women have earned their liberation and pushed their way into the field of art. Some modern pieces still come to highlight the sexual aspects of the female body, whereas some began to go past simply physical elements, highlighting the deeper nature of various female identities. This is a collection of artistic views of the female body, progressing through time and comparing the gaze of male artists to the gaze of female artists.

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
