The Black Death was one of history&apos;s most deadliest and devastating pandemics that swept through Europe and Asia during the 14th century. It holds a significant place in history due to its unparalleled death toll and profound societal impact. It sparked a lot of misinformation and misguided attempts at prevention and finding a cure as it ravaged populations. Many may think that the historical plague and the fictional zombie plague are worlds apart but after close examination, they are shown to have many intriguing parallels in their societal impact, society responses, and the wide spread of misinformation. Max Brooks brings these themes into play as he explores the zombie plague in his novel &quot;World War Z&quot;. The Black Death which is also known as the Bubonic Plague, was a deadly pandemic that was caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. It first emerged in Central Asia in the early 14th century and spread rapidly along trade routes to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The plague manifested in three forms: bubonic, which was characterized by swollen lymph nodes, also known as buboes; pneumonic, which affected the lungs; and septicemic, which infected the bloodstream. Many symptoms of the plague included fever, chills, vomiting, and the formation of blackened, necrotic tissue, thus giving the name &quot;The Black Death.&quot; Mortality rates had varied but would reach as high as 50-60% in affected populations. The Black Plague even lead to an estimated 25-30% reduction in Europe&apos;s total population. The Black Death resulted in major social, economic, and cultural consequences. It reshaped feudal societies, accelerated urbanization, and sparked major religious hatred and persecution.1

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
