We live in an extraordinary ecosystem, and much work is needed to protect and sustain it. At Friends of the San Juans, we are deeply committed to this mission. Since joining Friends in April 2023, I have visited Salish Sea communities spanning from Vancouver Island, as far north as Comox, British Columbia. My “listening tour” journey took me as far south as Wilsonville, Oregon. And I of course spent considerable time in my new home, among the vibrant island communities nestled right here in the heart of the Salish Sea—our beloved San Juan Islands. These past eight months I have witnessed firsthand what shoreline habitats look like without organizations like Friends, and dedicated members like you. I’ve seen sprawling seaside suburbs armor themselves against the very environment that initially drew people to these stunning coastal locations. The impact is profound — habitat loss, polluted and depleted waters, shoreline erosion, and the new and overwhelming prevalence of marine debris, nurdles, and microplastics. Nurdles bear a striking resemblance to forage fish eggs, which contribute to the decline of local sand lance, salmon, and migratory birds.

This story includes several of the pieces you might use in your own story–like paragraphs, buttons, separators, and more. To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. Try changing the paragraph font, and see what happens to this text.

Quotes use the theme’s title font, but you can also choose one of several different styling options.

Your theme’s accent color is used in both quotes (see above) and separators (below). If you add an express map to your story, your drawn features will use the accent color too.
